Opiskelin Pariisissa 2006. Minulla oli tenttivikko. Mutta minulla oli myös vahaa, jotta voin muovata
veistoksia.
Eräänä iltana kun minun todella olisi pitänyt lukea tenttiin, otin käteeni palan vahaa. En oikeastaan
ajatellut mitään. Vaha alkoi hitaasti lämmetä ja hakea muotoaan. Flow otti vallan ja se tuntui todella hyvältä. Hetken kuluttua huomasin että hei, tämä on jotain joka näyttää täysin erilaiselta kun katsoo toisesta kulmasta. Sitten aloin korostamaan vastakkaisia piirteitä eri kulmista. En tiedä kuinka kauan siinä meni, mutta
kun olin tyytyväinen, laskin vahan pöydälle ja nappasin kirjan. Tenttikin meni läpi.
Tämän näyttelyn “Naurava piru/surullinen kuu-ukko” on huomattavasti isompi kuin alkuperäinen vaha, joka myös valettiin pronssiin. Mutta jotenkin tämä vaivasi minua kaikki nämä vuodet, koska mielestäni idea olisi ansainnut isomman ja rohkeamman toteutuksen. Ja tässä se nyt on heti 20 vuoden jälkeen.

I was studying in Paris in 2006. I had exam week. But I also had wax so I could sculpt. One evening when I really should have been studying for an exam, I took a piece of wax in my hand. I wasn’t really thinking about anything. The wax slowly began to warm up and take shape. Flow took over and it felt really good. After a moment I noticed that this was something that looked completely different when viewed from another angle. Then I started emphasizing opposite features from different angles. I don’t know how long it took, but when I was satisfied, I put the wax down on the table and grabbed the book. I passed the exam too.
The “Laughing Devil/Sad Moon Man” in this exhibition is considerably larger than the original wax, which was also cast in bronze. But somehow this has bothered me all these years, because I felt the idea deserved a bigger and bolder execution. And here it is, finally after 20 years.
