Hyvää Vappua! – Happy Labour Day!

Veistos sijoittuu opiskeluaikoihini ja tarkemmin erääseen vappuun. Vaasa oli täynnä katutöitä –
ja kuoppia.

Illalla olimme ystäväni kanssa matkalla opiskelijajuhliin. Jotenkin päätimme mennä katsomaan yhtä
näistä kaivannoista lähempää. Istuuduimme yhteen kuoppaan ja avasimme oluet. Aloimme puhua
tulevaisuudesta, tytöistä, musiikista – kaikesta. Jotenkin oli niin viihtyisää siellä istua. Kohtaaminen oli todella lämmin. Meillä ei ollut kiirettä
mennä mihinkään – oluttakin kun oli. Lopulta, parin tunnin jälkeen, päätimme ettemme voi viettää
koko vappua siellä. Autoimme toisemme ylös kuopasta ja liityimme muiden seuraan juhliin.
Jotenkin tämä hetki on luonut yhden kirkkaimmista muistoistani opiskeluajoista.

Veistoksessa on ylhäältä katsottuna jalkakäytävä ja osa kadusta. Siellä on kuoppa kadussa, ja kuopasta
säteilee valoa, joka tulee kohtaamisestamme ja keskusteluistamme.

This sculpture is set during my student years, specifically one May Day. Vaasa was full of roadworks – and holes.

In the evening, my friend and I were on our way to a student party. Somehow we decided to take a closer look at one of these excavations. We sat down in one of the holes and opened our beers. We began talking about the future, girls, music – everything. Somehow it was so comfortable sitting there. The encounter was truly warm. We were in no hurry to go anywhere – we even had beers. Finally, after a couple of hours, we decided we couldn’t spend the entire May Day there. We helped each other out of the hole and joined the others at the party. Somehow this moment has created one of the brightest memories from my student days.

The sculpture, viewed from above, shows a sidewalk and part of a street. There is a hole in the street, and from the hole radiates light, which comes from our encounter and our conversations.
